FULL MOON on New Years Eve 2009//10 has extra significance

Depending on where you live worldwide, the full moon will fall on either December 31, 2009, or January 1, 2010. The full moon falls on December 31 in the Americas, Europe and Africa and is a Blue Moon, or the second full moon in December.

For New Zealand, Australia and most of Asia the full moon will fall on January 1. For that part of the globe, January of 2010 will have two full moons – and the second full moon in January will be their full moon. In the Americas, it is the first of two full moons to occur in December 2009. The full Blue Moon will occur at 19h13 Universtal Time (GMT).

Tonight’s moon will be out all night long, lighting up the nighttime from dusk till dawn. The big full moon will rise around sunset, climb up highest in the sky around midnight, and will set tomorrow around sunrise. As seen from the northern hemisphere, the moon will follow the lofty path of the June sun across the sky tonight. In the southern hemisphere, the moon will lurk close to the horizon, like the winter sun.

This will be the 13th Full Moon of 2009.

The minor partial lunar eclipse takes place in Gemini, and is visible primarily from the Eastern Hemisphere.The origin of the term “blue moon” is steeped in folklore, and its meaning has changed and acquired new nuances over time. Some folktales say that when there is a full blue moon, the moon had a face and talked to those in its light.

This year has been designated International Year of Astronomy by the United Nations to highlight 400 years of astronomy since 1609 when Galileo first viewed the heavens with a telescope. It was also 400 years ago when Galileo turned his telescope toward the moon and discovered that the moon “is uneven, rough and full of cavities and prominences.”

This emotional and sometimes unstable environment occurs because there is change in the electromagnetic energy that affects us mentally and neurologically. There will be some stress as blockages will begin to crumble and then there will be a feeling of freedom. The ecliptic conjunction occurs at about 20:12:45 CET and greatest eclipse takes place at 20:22:39 CET when the eclipse magnitude will reach 0.0763. The eclipse ends at about 22:28:11 CET. It is only a partial eclipse, but should be visible all over Europe if the weather conditions permit.
