Heitor Alves (BRA) was unstoppable on his way to claim the ASP 6-Star San Miguel Pro Zarautz presented by Euskaltel title over Tim Boal (FRA) in a well fought 35-minute battle. Having taken down an inform Gabriel Medina (BRA) in the semis, Alves was on a roll and proved unbeatable despite a last ditched effort by Boal to take the victory.

Clean lines in the 3ft (1m) range were on offer however event officials were forced to place the event on hold during the high tide because of infrequent set waves. With clear skies and fantastic beach weather, the shore line and esplanade were once again packed. The huge crowd revelled in the magnificent displays of surfing put on by all the guys on this last day of competition.

Tom Whitaker (AUS), 30, a veteran of the elite ASP World Tour of eight years, will return to competition for the next several events as the first replacement surfer for injured Australian Joel Parkinson (AUS), 29. Whitaker, who has finished as high as 8th on the ASP World Tour (2006), narrowly missed the ASP’s midyear field reduction which culminated last week at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. However, with the injury of Parkinson, and Whitaker’s position as first replacement, the Sydney-sider will have an opportunity against the best in the world for the next several events.

The Union Express is the first installment in a three-part documentary series by award winning director Josh Landan. The first film will star pro surfer/songwriter Timmy Curran as a tour guide down the West Coast, featuring stops in San Francisco, Huntington Beach, San Diego, and other major surf spots along the Amtrak line. Timmy will be joined along the way by pro surfers Rob Machado, Dane Reynolds, Conner Coffin, Damien Hobgood, Nate Tyler, Keith Malloy, Taylor Knox, and more. The movie will be a blend of surfing, interviews, musical performance and lifestyle commentary on the culture and communities they encounter.

-The entire documentary will be shot on 16 mm film and in high definition. The second and third installments of The Union Express are slated to film in Japan (2010) and India (2011) in the same style and format.

-The Union Express will begin a national tour in the spring of 2010 with premiers and musical performances by some of the stars in scheduled cities around the US.
