Tom Whitaker (AUS), 30, a veteran of the elite ASP World Tour of eight years, will return to competition for the next several events as the first replacement surfer for injured Australian Joel Parkinson (AUS), 29. Whitaker, who has finished as high as 8th on the ASP World Tour (2006), narrowly missed the ASP’s midyear field reduction which culminated last week at the Billabong Pro Tahiti. However, with the injury of Parkinson, and Whitaker’s position as first replacement, the Sydney-sider will have an opportunity against the best in the world for the next several events.

The Sooruz Lacanau Pro an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned event witnessed an amazing day of competition in excellent conditions which are forecasted to continue through the weekend setting up for some great finals action. Standouts were many as surfers displayed progressive modern manoeuvres to impress the huge crowds lining the shore.

The Sooruz Lacanau Pro an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned event ran through to complete 12 heats of Round One of competition with many outstanding high-level performances witnessed on the main contest peak setting the scene for what can be expected to come at the 31st edition of this ASP Men’s Star-Series 6-Star 145,000$US event.

Peaks in the 3-4ft (1m) range were on offer and improved as the tide lowered during the late afternoon session of competition. Light winds with early morning rain which cleared away opened up a great day of action packed surfing from the strong international field of competitors at the Sooruz Lacanau Pro.

Day 2 and the final day for the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Japan Pro Junior Qualifying Series commenced this morning at 9am at Hiratsuka beach. The local weather at Hiratsuka today was partly cloudy with fair skies to create an excellent final day.
The waves were in the 1 to 2 ft.(0.5meters) range and rose along with the change of tide and winds.

4 girls Nao Omura JPN, Reika Noro JPN, Natsuki Suda JPN and Minato Takahashi JPN moved to the finals. Last week at Chiba Noro claimed victory but this week at HIratsuka Oomura fights back and claims 2nd victory for 2010.

The Billabong Azores Islands Pro presented by Nissan an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) sanctioned event was forced to cancel due to a lack of contestable waves. Event officials and surfers were greeted at dawn by a flat ocean as the expected overnight swell increase failed to eventuate. Contest director Rodrigo Heredia made another call mid-morning however this proved fruitless leaving the remaining 96 surfers of round two unable to compete further in the 145,000$US event.

Despite all attempts made by Rodrigo Heredia to complete the event or at least advance through some more rounds the absolute flat conditions made it impossible to start round two. Heredia who has been coming to the Azores all his life has never seen such conditions for such a long period of time. Remaining positive and helping both event officials and surfers as much as possible during the entire event Heredia received no criticism for any of his decisions.
