 It is just over a month until the world’s northernmost and coldest professional surfing contest makes its third appearance in the north of Scotland. With its long, clean, super-fast icy waves, the O’Neill Highland Open by Swatch attracts a host of the world’s best surfers to the small town of Thurso in Caithness.

For World Qualifying Series (WQS) competitor and last year’s runner up, Australian surfer Jarrad Howse, the Highland Open is an event that stands out from everything else on the gruelling WQS circuit. “I love the event,” says Howse.

“I think it’s the history of the place and the fact that it’s so different from everywhere else on the tour. Usually we’re in and around big cities and festivals but it’s so special that it’s in this little town of Thurso. It’s just so down to earth and so far removed from everything.”

It’s not just the location – at 59 degrees north – that makes the Highland Open so special. The winner of the event walks away with a unique prize in contemporary surfing – The Chieftain, a double-handed, limited edition Medieval Scottish war sword. The sword is a replica of an early Claymore, a sword depicted on ancient grave slabs in the Scottish Highlands.

On May 1st & 2nd 2005, Teahupo'o roared like never before over two days, and it was completely documented as THE BEST EVER by Blackwater director Tim Bonython. Day One was big grey and very scary and Day Two delivered a day of massive, perfect waves. See the images that went around the world--including amazing footage of a jet ski going over the falls and almost taking off Raimana Van Bastolaer's head! Also, the biggest wave EVER paddled into at Teahupo'o with 2001 World Champ, Globe's CJ Hobgood taking the drop on a monster of a set wave, now etched in Tehaupo'o's history.

Traveling the world for 40 years with some of todays most legendary surfers, Greg Weaver and Spyder Wills captured Super 8mm images that have, until now been lost for almost a half a century...Corky Carrol in Newport Beach in 1965, Jerry Lopez in Maui in 1970. Rory Russell and Lopez discovering Bali. An in depth look at the Black Trunks of the Westside shot in the mid 70s as explained by Sunny Garcia and Black Trunks member Warren Hoohuli. Never before seen footage of the Z Boys as Stacy Peralta tells where radical surfing really started. This is only a sample of the legends and locations that director Gregory Schell has assembled in the new film Chasing The Lotus.

Assembled from the "Lost Reels" of Weaver and Wills and narrated by Jeff Bridges, the film promises to go down as one of todays most indepth looks at surf discovery and will be around for many years to come.
